I had worked as an accountant at various levels for 14 years until leaving Toyota in South Africa and immigrating to New Zealand in January 2008. I was hired by the Porter Group as a Management Accountant, however the role quickly evolved into an operational position. My career had taken a turn from commercial accounting to operations which I rather enjoyed. With increasing experience this change led to a renewed trajectory in my career.
Through my 20’s I always had a clear plan to what I wanted to achieve by the time I turned 30. Once I reached 30, I had reached my set goals. I had no plan beyond that so meandered through most of my 30’s, including moving halfway around the world. After the Canterbury earthquakes my thinking refocused, and an MBA was the best opportunity to enhance the relatively new career path I was on in management.
The long hours and zero family time! Seriously though, the collaboration in the group and the opportunity to leverage, not only off the knowledge of the lecturers, but also the knowledge and experience of your peers. Essentially the environment to creatively solve problems and share experiences.
