I was in a highly specialised, monopoly type profession, and I wanted to be able to be involved in a wider range of activities for the company, as well as being able to talk knowledgeably to people outside my own company. So I needed to better understand the wider issues involved in determining strategy and running a business, especially in highly competitive markets.
